AI Search Versus Google Search: What Actually Changed

Send it straight to your assistant and get the short version first. The link travels with the prompt, so the model reads the real page.

The short answer

The output changed from a list of links to an answer. Most of your SEO work still counts. The genuinely new work is off-site corroboration and making individual facts extractable.

What stayed the same

If it was good hygiene before, it still is. Crawlability, a sensible site structure, clear headings, fast pages, accurate business information, structured data. None of that became obsolete and all of it feeds the newer work.

This is the two thirds of any AI visibility proposal that you should recognise from an SEO invoice.[1]

What changed

The output. A list of links became a written answer, sometimes with a short recommended list attached. That single change moves the contest from occupying a position to being worth quoting.

For a contractor it means the buyer arrives having already been given an opinion, rather than a set of options to evaluate themselves.

What is genuinely new

Off-site corroboration

Third-party sources moved from being link equity to being evidence. What the licensing board, the trade directory and the review platform say about you now competes directly with what your own site says.

Fact-level extractability

Individual claims have to survive being lifted out of context. This is a writing discipline more than a technical one, and it is the piece most agencies have no process for.

What is being oversold

The pitchThe reality
A special file gets you into AI answersGoogle states no special markup is required for eligibility[2]
We report your AI traffic separatelyAI Overviews traffic is not cleanly separable in GA4
Guaranteed AI recommendationsNot promisable, and offering it proves no baseline was taken
Rewrite every page for machinesControlled tests of aggressive rewriting came back worse, and it strips your voice

The honest summary

If someone tells you nothing has changed, they have not measured it. If someone tells you everything has changed, they are selling you a new retainer. Both errors point the same direction, which is away from measurement.

What it means for a contractor day to day

The abstract version of this shift is easy to nod along to and hard to act on. Here is what actually changes in the week of a construction business.

  • The buyer arrives with an opinion. They were handed a short list with reasons attached, so the call starts further along and the questions are sharper.
  • Being unlisted is invisible rather than merely lower. There is no page two to be found on. You are in the answer or you are not in the conversation.
  • Your reviews get read, not counted. A machine reading review text extracts scope and location from it. Empty five-star reviews contribute almost nothing.
  • Old listings bite harder. A stale directory entry is no longer a minor inconsistency, it is a competing claim about what your company is.
  • Referrals get verified. Even a warm referral now frequently gets checked against an assistant before the call, which is a step that did not exist five years ago.

That last one is the change most owners underestimate. Your reputation used to travel intact through a recommendation. Now it passes through a machine on the way.

Questions builders actually ask

Do AI answers send traffic?

Some, and it is hard to attribute cleanly. The stronger commercial effect for contractors is being named in the shortlist a buyer arrives with, which shows up as better calls rather than more clicks.

Will traditional search go away?

No. Both exist side by side, and the underlying work overlaps heavily enough that you should not be running two separate programmes.

Should I block AI crawlers?

That is a real decision with a real trade-off. Blocking protects your content from being used and removes you from the answers. If being recommended matters, they need to be allowed to read you.
